Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a graduate/early careers Criticality Safety Specialist to join its busy team, flexible working across the NWS estate.

It sits within the GDF Integrated Safety Case (ISC) team within GDF technical function, within the wider NWS technical function.

The primary purposes of this role are:

  • Develop personal knowledge and experience in the field of criticality safety, working towards Suitably Qualified & Experienced Person (SQEP) status.  
  • Provide support to NWS criticality safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) across their GDF portfolio of work:
  • Development of the organisation;
  • GDF design;
  • Disposability assessment;
  • Siting.
  • Provide support to delivery of relevant portions of the GDF Integrated Safety Case, namely the criticality safety elements of the:
  • Pre-closure case;
  • Post-closure case;
  • Transport case;
  • Security and Safeguards case.
  • Subject to need, provide criticality safety support to other aspects of the NWS mission (for example, but not limited to: Near Surface disposal and LLWR activities).
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Development of personal knowledge in the field of criticality safety, through a combination of (but not limited to):
  • Formal training courses;
  • Self-directed learning;
  • “On the job” learning;
  • Mentoring from relevant NWS staff.
  • Development of personal experience in the field of criticality safety by execution and completion of criticality safety tasks as directed by: The NWS criticality SME and the NWS ALARP Studies Lead.
Experience Required

Essential

  • Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) background – Degree qualified or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

Desirable (but not pre-requisite)

  • Awareness of the criticality physics
  • Awareness of UK nuclear industry
  • Awareness of systems engineering
