Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Senior Mechanical Engineer within the technical organisation. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work within the NWS mechanical engineering team, reporting to the Lead Mechanical Engineer. This role will predominantly be aligned to the Repository Asset Care Enhancement and Remediation (RACER) programme, however there will be opportunity to work across Nuclear Waste Services mechanical engineering challenges.

As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the delivery of mechanical engineering work for the RACER programme on behalf of the RACER Programme Manager and the RACER Senior Engineering Manager. The RACER programme is the primary route for delivery of infrastructure projects on the Low-Level Waste Repository (LLWR) site, which enables the continued safe disposal of the United Kingdoms (UKs) Low Level Waste.

You will also have the opportunity to support the Senior Engineering Manager (Mechanical) in the development of the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) mechanical engineering.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Act as the mechanical engineering lead for the RACER Programme
  • Management of all aspects of mechanical discipline design work, for example production, selection, checking, development and delivery of optimised, fit for purpose engineering and design solutions, balancing aspects of safety and environmental performance, operational effectiveness and constructability.
  • Provide oversight of the delivery of design deliverables within the supply chain and manage the delivery of deliverables produced by the NWS mechanical engineering team.
  • Author discipline specific engineering design requirements; ensuring clarity and accuracy of functional and technical specifications and scopes of work provided to supply chain organisations.
  • Act on behalf of the Lead Mechanical Engineer with delegated authority to approve, accept and reject mechanical engineering design.
  • Ensure that all mechanical contractors are suitably qualified and experienced to produce engineering deliverables.
  • Input to and review work packages, tender selection, and tender submissions for the procurement of discipline related engineering services.
  • Identification and management of mechanical design, engineering and technical risks that affect delivery of tasks and projects.
  • Ensure hazards are addressed appropriately in design and construction by following NWS procedures and relevant UK legislation.
  • Work collaboratively in a successful multi-disciplinary project engineering team.
  • Maintaining technical competence and currency with respect to modern standards and methodologies relevant to the mechanical discipline
  • Provide support to the Lead Mechanical Engineer and LLWR Design Authority as required.
Experience Required

Essential

  • Relevant experience serving in an engineering or design capacity with responsibility for the production, checking and approval of design and engineering deliverables including drawings, specifications, calculations, and reports.
  • Level 6 qualification with a bias in mechanical engineering.
  • Accredited by an appropriate professional institution (i.e. Incorporated/Chartered Engineer) or capable of achieving Chartership and currently working toward that objective.
  • Background in delivering engineering design in a project environment.
  • Ability to ensure minimum standards and fundamental process requirements are maintained.
  • Ability to challenge others at all levels of the organisation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Aligned to organisational values and behaviours of action-orientated, ambitious, integrity, collaborative and inclusive.
  • Willingness to learn and develop professionally.

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in an engineering leadership role, managing staff and contractors.
  • Experience working in accordance with the Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations as, or on behalf of, a designer, principal designer or a client where it has been necessary to retain some oversight of design during design, construction and commissioning.
  • Understanding of “Systems Engineering” concepts and principles, as per the International Council for Systems Engineering.
  • Experience developing a scope of works, requirements and verification activities.
  • Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team in a project or programme environment.
  • Experience- delivering engineering in a highly regulated industry.
  • Experience in designing for operations and maintenance.
