Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for an Environmental Advisor to join its busy team, flexible working from our Repository site in Cumbria.

As part of this role, you will support the business in all aspects of environmental monitoring, land quality and site characterisation and offer supervision of environmental monitoring and site characterisation personnel on the LLWR site.

This role will involve working in conjunction with another Environmental Advisor within the Environmental Monitoring and Site Characterisation (EM&SC) Team.  The Environmental Advisor currently in position will take a lead role in environmental monitoring whilst the successful candidate will take a lead role in site characterisation, including land quality, on the LLWR site. The successful candidate will be required to substitute for the other Environmental Advisor when required.

The role will require good communication with the Site Infrastructure team, Health and Safety Team and Project teams to ensure that ground investigation plans can be produced, and ground investigation carried out in a timely manner prior to site development works. 

Roles and Responsibilities
  • To take a lead role in the delivery of the site characterisation programme and addressing contaminated land issues on the LLWR site 
  • To assist in the delivery of the environmental monitoring programme including carrying out sampling and field work as required.
  • To develop the land quality strategy for the LLWR site, aligned to the site development strategy.
  • Provide advice and guidance on environmental monitoring, land quality and site characterisation in support of statutory requirements, safety cases, site operations and projects.
  • Provide support services of a technical & non-technical nature, with a level of professional input in the execution of these roles and activities. 
  • To carry out designated work packages to standards of safety, cost, quality & time.
  • Where appropriate, motivate, guide and assist in the training of the group to develop the skills and abilities of others for the benefit of the company.
  • Contribute to the formulation of budgetary information and procedures for environmental monitoring and site characterisation.
  • To take a lead role in the correct management and storage of site characterisation data and assist in the management of environmental monitoring data.
  • To deputise for the Environmental Monitoring Manager as appropriate.
  • To assist in the production of statutory environmental monitoring reports in accordance with the Environmental Permit.
  • To take a lead role in the production of land quality related investigation plans, interpretive reports and remediation plans, where required.
Experience Required

Due to the large range of tasks that the role requires the successful applicant will need to be able to show a broad knowledge of environmental monitoring and site characterisation.

Essential

  • Interpretation of environmental and site characterisation data (3 years plus experience).
  • Proven track record in the production of technical reports (3 years plus experience).
  • Relevant degree in environmental subject (minimum 2:2).
  • Experience of carrying out a variety of environmental monitoring including groundwater sampling.
  • Proven track record of organising and carrying out ground investigations.
  • A good understanding of the use of site characterisation data in the development of geological models.
  • Data management and storage.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent IT skills (MS Word/Excel/GIS).
  • Full driving license.

Desireable

  • Thorough knowledge of the LLWR site environmental monitoring programme.
  • A good understanding of LLWR site land quality issues.
  • A proven track record of working on a Nuclear Licensed Site.
