Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services is looking for a passionate Environmental Advisor to join the team. 

The ideal candidate must have a hands-on approach to developing, implementing and monitoring environmental strategies that promote sustainable development across all NWS sites.

Part of this role will be to advise organisations and local communities on how to minimise their impact on the environment. This will include developing and measuring the success of their waste strategies in these areas. Typically, the areas covered will include water management, use of plastics, recycling, renewable energy and pollution control.

As part of this role, you will be responsible for

  • Supporting the maintenance, development and continuous improvement of RWM’s Environmental Management System to internal and externally benchmarked standards.  
  • Supporting the continuous improvement of RWM’s corporate environmental sustainability management arrangements, performance, and reporting. Monitor and report on trends and abnormalities within RWMs Environmental objectives. 
  • Supporting the continual improvement of RWM’s processes to contribute to organisational development.  
  • Champion and coordinate environmental sustainability across RWM. 

It is planned that this role will be widened to an NWS wide environmental sustainability role.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Support the implementation of the environmental and sustainability management strategies and champion environment sustainability. 
  • Align environmental sustainability strategy, goals and objectives across the wider organisation.
  • Monitor and report against the sustainability and environmental objectives.  
  • Support the development of NWS’s integrated management system and the delivery of environmental and sustainability management system arrangements and help improve performance in these areas. 
  • Development and continual improvement of NWS’s, environmental sustainability management system arrangements to improve performance, meet developing organisational requirements and appropriate internal, NDA Group, external and international standards.
  • Advise and provide guidance to the organisation in relation to environmental sustainability management and reporting requirements. This covers both the day-to-day operations, but also the management system requirements relating to the implementation of the geological disposal programme.
  • Deliver and support environmental and sustainability improvement plans and its supply chain.
  • Support independent oversight of adherence to environmental and other management system standards, and the investigation, reporting and effective resolution of non-conformance.
  • Conduct regular internal and supplier audits, and other assurance activities, in accordance with programmes/schedules that you will set.
  • Seek and maintain the appropriate third-party approvals of NWS’s management systems.
  • Support management of planning authority and regulatory relationships and interactions and the demonstration of reliable compliance.
  • Represent RWM at internal and external working group and forums.
  • Support the Nuclear safety and environment team in other environmental matters when required.
Experience Required

Essential:

  • A passion for the environment and sustainability.
  • The passion and knowledge to drive improvements in sustainability.
  • Experience in environmental suitability
  • Degree in a relevant subject or relevant experience.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institute eg IEMA/NI/SRP 
  • (A Professional membership will be paid for by NWS)

Desirable:

  • Understanding of Audit process.
  • Good understanding of environmental and sustainability issues, especially those associated with infrastructure, waste management and/or nuclear.
  • Understanding of integrated management systems, including environmental and sustainability management system arrangements.
  • Understanding of environmental and sustainability management and reporting standards. 
  • Experience of driving environmental and sustainability improvement in the organisation including the supply chain.
  • Good interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and disciplined approach to work.
