Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for an Environmental Manager to join its busy team, flexible working across the NWS estate in Cumbria and Oxfordshire.

As part of this role, you will provide management support to the Senior Lead for Environmental and the Environmental team, delivering the provision of an environmental support, advice and assurance service to support Nuclear Waste Services including the maintenance of a comprehensive Permissions Schedule.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Act as an owner and ensure compliance with environmental arrangements including for GDF, supporting development and continuous improvement of NWS Environmental Management and environmental legislation, permits, license and ISO14001 compliance arrangements.
  • Provide advice on regulatory and development consent requirements to inform the GDF Programme, Waste Management Programme, Technical Programme and NWS Organisational Development.
  • Input to developing safety cases and regulatory submissions and their current application in conjunction with the Senior Lead for Environmental.
  • Input to supply chain assurance on environmental matters
  • Supporting the delivery of environmental sustainability within NWS, with a focus on the GDF, in conjunction with the Senior Lead for Environmental.
Experience Required

Essential

  • Good first degree in science or engineering subject.
  • Understanding of environmental sustainability good practice, ideally in a high hazard industry, and proven experience of successfully developing and implementing improvement plans.
  • Experience in Radioactive Substances Regulation Permit compliance delivery including Permit condition management arrangements, RWA provision, disposal/discharge management and control.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with a range of staff at all levels.
  • Leadership experience including management, controlling, and directing of teams.
  • Extensive knowledge in Environmental Management arrangements
  • Experience in carbon management

Desirable

  • Experience in discharging Process Ownership
  • Experience in discharging Intelligent Customer responsibilities.
  • Experience in acting as a Subject Matter Expert for Environmental Management.
  • Experience in Non-Radiological Permit application, implementation, and compliance
  • Chartered membership status in relevant professional institute.
  • Experience of ensuring research, community engagement, geological characterisation, nuclear design, and construction is conducted in accordance with relevant environmental sustainability standards, guidance, and good practice.
  • Experience of implementing behavioural approaches to environmental sustainability and understanding of the relevant of human factors to ensuring health, safety, and welfare.
  • Significant experience of implementing environmental sustainability management systems, developing reliable and resilient safety systems and processes, writing policies, procedures, and reports.
  • Significant experience of managing environmental safety inspections, audits, reviews etc. and using them with performance indicators to monitor performance and target improvement activities.
  • Significant experience of establishing appropriate environmental sustainability competence standards, training standards, and leading the implementation of both training and awareness raising programmes.
  • Experience of using project management techniques and ensuring the effective delivery of health and safety in complex, high profile projects and programmes.
