Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for an Environmental Monitoring Technician to join its busy team, flexible working from our Repository site in Cumbria.

NWS is required to undertake a comprehensive Environmental Monitoring Programme (EMP) across the LLWR site and surrounding areas to assess the impact of historical and current site operations.  In addition, the NWS operates a programme of site characterisation to investigate any land contamination issues from historical activities on and surrounding the LLWR site.

As the Environmental Monitoring Technician you will be required to supplement the current environmental monitoring and site characterisation (EM&SC) team on the LLWR site to carry out the environmental monitoring and site characterisation required in the EMP and site characterisation programmes.

This role is an ideal opportunity for someone to gain practical experience of carrying out environmental fieldwork on a heavily regulated industrial site.  Although a previous track record of carrying out environmental monitoring would be beneficial, the successful applicant will be trained in all necessary aspects of environmental monitoring required to carry out the job.  This position would therefore suit an existing environmental monitoring practitioner, recent school leaver, graduate, or someone looking to change careers.

The position will require a positive attitude to learning, and an ability to proactively carry out fieldwork in an organised and consistent manner in accordance with existing processes.  The position is based on the LLWR site and daily attendance on site is likely to be required.

  • Carry out checks on the condition of monitoring infrastructure and ensure that it remains fit for purpose
Experience Required

  • Interest in geology / hydrogeology / hydrology / chemistry.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Proactive behaviour.
  • Ability to undertake tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Full driving license.
