Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Safety Case Lead (related to Site Justification), flexible working across the NWS estate.

As part of this role you will:

  • Ensure consistency of safety claims with respect to siting across all lifecycle phases.
  • Promote consistency in the approach to the site selection process for work within the remit of a Geological Disposal Facility (Nuclear Safety Case, Environmental Safety Case, security and conventional safety for operations) and for Near Surface Disposal
  • Liaise with Requirements function to assist in the resolution / balance of potential conflicts between nuclear safety, environmental safety, security and conventional safety (for ops) with regard to site selection and justification.
  • Promote consistency across both operational and post-closure phases of operation with regard to the safety claims in relation to siting of a GDF or NSD facility.
  • Provide advice to NWS with respect to nuclear site licencing, notably in respect of site justification as per ONR guidance
  • Provide external hazards SME expertise, including support to ongoing operations at LLWR.
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Understand ONR and EA expectations for site justification and (in conjunction with Pre-Closure and Post-Closure safety case Leads) develop NWS approach to addressing these.
  • Act as NWS SME for external hazards, including for periodic safety reviews (LC 15).
  • Support the development of the strategy for successful Site Licence application (SLA), defining the evolution of the site characteristics (characterisation of potentially several sites through to submission of a final Site Justification Report to underpin SLA)
  • Support the development of the strategy for justification of the site with respect to the Environmental Safety Case, defining evolution of the site characteristics required for post-closure (characterisation of several sites through to justification of the preferred site to underpin environmental applications).
  • Liaising with the Systems Safety Engineering lead, ensure any design requirements arising from the Siting Evaluation are appropriately captured.
  • Liaising with both Pre-Closure and Post-Closure safety case leads to provide necessary site selection substantiation input to respective safety cases.
Experience Required
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly at senior management level and liaison with UK regulators.
  • Ability to effectively explain complex technical issues to a wide audience (including non specialists), both verbally and in writing.
  • Sound knowledge of the UK regulatory framework and the application of relevant legislation, guidance and relevant good practice within the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industry.
  • In depth understanding of the role of the safety case and the assessment of internal and external hazards.
  • Experienced in the mentoring, training and development of more junior staff
  • Direct Safety Case delivery experience, in nuclear industry with at least 10 years experience
  • Strong track record of leading large multi-disciplinary teams delivering complex, challenging, fit for purpose safety cases.
  • Experience in the design of engineering measures that mitigate the risk of internal and external hazards
  • Highly experienced in the development of safety case strategies and plans, co-ordinating production of safety submissions including all specialist safety input.
  • Experience of liaising with Regulators.
  • Experience in the analysis of structures and/or systems to characterise the loads from internal and external hazards.
  • Direct experience and understanding of the science of physical processes which drive natural hazards and the derivation of hazard level/frequency relationships.
Qualifications Needed
  • Degree in Engineering or Science
  • Current Registration with Professional body;
  • SQEP in external hazards
