Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Safety Excellence Manager (Initiatives) to join its busy team flexible working across the NWS estate.

The Safety Excellence Initiatives Manager plays a central role in the definition and embedding of NWS safety and security improvement (Safety Excellence) to ensure conformance with good practice and regulatory expectations alongside developing initiatives to improve the understanding of the importance of safety and security across Nuclear Waste Services.

Safety Excellence encompasses a wide variety of different approaches to bring about changes in behaviour, access to up-to-date information as well as helping Subject Matter Experts communicate more effectively with the business.  The Safety Excellence Initiatives Manager will be responsible for implementing improvements identified through the long term strategy as well as immediate improvements identified through data collected on events and incidents coming from the Operating Experience team.  They will be working in collaboration with the NWS Culture Transformation team and colleagues across EHSS&Q to implement these initiatives to bring about sustainable improvements in our safety and security culture.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Lead the implementation and embedding of NWS safety and security improvement activities (Safety Excellence) to ensure conformance with good practice and regulatory expectations.
  • Lead on advising, coordinating and guiding EHSS&Q information provision activities across NWS, ensuring information is current and accessible and contact points are clear.
  • Support the implementation of culture and improvement initiatives across all EHSS&Q functions (HS&E, Security, CISO, Quality)
  • Contribute to the creation, review and ongoing update of the NWS safety and security culture improvement strategy and the associated programme identifying shorter and longer term targets to realise improvements.
  • Lead the definition and implementation of appropriate KPIs to measure and evidence improvement of NWS safety and security culture
  • Responsible for identifying memorable and engaging ways to communicate corporate expectations of safety and security culture and the consequences if we are not successful
  • Implement the short, medium and long term plans for improving understanding of safety and security expectations on colleagues, including measures for evidencing improvement
  • Working in collaboration with supply chain partners, build on their understanding and personal accountability for adopting good safety and security culture, values, and behaviours as well as managing the appropriate standards, metrics and training.
  • Work with the Lead Operating Experience Manager to implement improvements arising from the Operating Experience Feedback and Learning from Experience processes
  • Work with the Lead Operational Experience Manager to assist with Learning Reviews and running of key Organisational Learning events
  • Work with the EHSS&Q Director and Senior Lead Organisational Learning and Culture to organise and run NWS-wide events relating to Safety Excellence
  • To be aware of and lead by example by role modelling the company’s Standards and Expectations
  • Manage the risks within your scope of work in compliance with the company risk management procedures
Experience Required

Essential

  • Significant understanding of organisational culture and how to implement change.
  • Very strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills including ability to interact with and influence different audiences at all levels across NWS.
  • Proven ability to behave professionally in challenging circumstances, engage with a range of stakeholders to effectively drive change and proven leadership in challenging conversations involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to mitigate cultural challenges faced during programme evolution.
  • Excellent understanding of cultural/climate monitoring and measurement.
  • A track record of promoting ‘just’ culture in high-hazard industries.

Desirable

  • Understanding of the regulatory regime applicable to nuclear waste management and disposal.
  • Excellent influencing skills, together with the ability to communicate complex messages to a wide range of audiences and maintain collaborative working relationships.
  • Chartered membership status in relevant professional institute.
  • Broad-based familiarity with the NDA, NWS and radioactive waste management in the UK.
