Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Safety Excellence Strategy Manager to join its busy team flexible working across the NWS estate.

The Safety Excellence Strategy Manager plays a central role in the strategic approach and definition of NWS safety and security improvement (Safety Excellence) to ensure conformance with good practice and regulatory expectations alongside developing initiatives to improve the understanding of the importance of safety and security across Nuclear Waste Services.

Safety Excellence encompasses a wide variety of different approaches to bring about changes in behaviour, access to up-to-date information as well as helping Subject Matter Experts communicate more effectively with the business.  The Safety Excellence Strategy Manager will be primarily responsible for the definition and scoping of improvements, working to develop a long-term strategy as well as identify immediate interventions as a result of data coming from across the EHSS&Q and other directorates.  They will be working in collaboration with the Culture Transformation Team and the Safety Excellence Initiatives Manager to define and implement improvements, bringing about sustainable improvements in our safety and security culture.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Lead the definition and road-mapping of NWS safety and security improvement (Safety Excellence) to ensure conformance with good practice and regulatory expectations.
  • Working with colleagues from across NWS, lead the definition and development of NWS safety and security culture improvement strategy and associated programme, identifying shorter and longer term targets to realise improvements.
  • Represent NWS and liaise with regulators and industry peers as Subject Matter Experts to develop good practice.
  • Lead the definition of short, medium and long term plans for improving understanding of safety and security expectations on colleagues
  • Lead on interpreting data relevant to safety and security performance, using this to inform the approach to safety and security culture and communicating areas of focus to Subject Matter Experts, Senior Managers and the Executive
  • Alongside the Lead Operating Experience Manager, interpret data collected from across EHSS&Q and other directorates and translate this to actionable information for Senior Leaders and Subject Matter Experts to inform their approach to safety and security.
  • Coordinate the needs of functions across EHSS&Q (HS&E, Security, CISO, Quality) in improving understanding of their role in Safety Excellence across Nuclear Waste Services
    Work with the EHSS&Q Director, Senior Lead Organisational Learning and Culture and Safety Excellence Implementation Manager to organise and run NWS-wide events relating to safety and security culture
  • To assist (and deputise for) the Senior Lead Organisational Learning & Culture in coordinating initiatives with the Transformation Culture team and Internal Communications team
    Developing initiatives to improve the understanding of safety and security across Nuclear Waste Services, these may include additional training materials, culture initiatives, improvement exercises, targeted interventions, coaching of teams, developing additional guidance
  • To be aware of and be a visible role model for the company’s Standards and Expectations.
  • Working in collaboration with supply chain partners, build on their understanding and personal accountability for adopting good safety and security culture, values, and behaviours as well as managing the appropriate standards, metrics and training.
  • Work with the Lead Operating Experience Manager to implement improvements arising from the OEF and LfE processes
Experience Required
  • Significant understanding of organisational culture and how to implement change.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills including ability to interact with and influence different audiences at all levels across NWS.
  • Proven ability to define, develop and implement strategic plans in safety or security.
  • Proven ability to behave professionally in challenging circumstances, engage with a range of stakeholders to effectively drive change and proven leadership in challenging conversations involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to mitigate cultural challenges faced during programme evolution.
  • A track record of promoting ‘just’ culture in high-hazard industries.
