Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Senior Project Manager (Repository Technical Portfolio), flexible working 3-4 days a week from its site in West Cumbria.

As Senior Project Manager, you would be responsible for all technical project management activity within the Waste Operations portfolio, primarily supporting the development of the Environmental Safety Case for the Repository Site and other science and research projects to support current and future operations on our nuclear licensed site in West Cumbria. These activities are critical to enabling significant investment in the Repository associated with capping the legacy waste disposal facilities and the construction of future capacity.

You will have overall responsibility for the technical project portfolio leading the delivery team including forming and managing collaborative relationships with our supply chain delivery partners. You will line manage a team of project delivery professionals and oversee the matrixed functional resources that support delivery, such as Project Controls / Commercial / Quality. You will ensure activities are completed to high levels of quality to meet governance, assurance and regulatory requirements.

This role provides the opportunity to work across the full project delivery lifecycle; delivering a diverse portfolio of project and tasks as part of the Waste Operations portfolio leadership team; reporting to the Repository Site Programmes Director and being an active member of the Nuclear Waste Services' project delivery community.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Managing and motivating the Project delivery team to achieve the desired outputs and results.
  • Consolidating and documenting the fundamental components of Projects ensuring that appropriate and robust controls are in place whilst talking into account safety and the environment.
  • Establishing and maintaining project governance arrangements, defining clear roles, responsibilities and accountabilities.
  • Applying appropriate lifecycles, processes, methods, techniques and tools whilst tailoring them to the specific needs of specific Projects / Tasks.
  • Ensuring that quality activities relating to Projects / Tasks are planned and performed correctly and are within tolerance defined by the Plan.
  • Planning Projects / Tasks in sufficient detail to ensure integration of all activities, identification of dependencies, and understanding of critical paths and key milestones.
    Managing reviews at appropriate points throughout the delivery lifecycle which will inform governance decisions by providing evaluations of progress, performance, risk, contingency and continuing relevance.
  • Identifying stakeholder expectations and managing them, taking account of their levels of influence and particular interests, establishing effective engaging relationships with them.
  • Actively identifying / managing threats and opportunities including instigating mitigation actions, identifying risk responses / contingency plans and managing them to a conclusion.
  • Recognising, anticipating and managing dependencies between tasks, people, processes, and systems.
  • Reviewing and actively managing changes for potential impact on the Project Baseline.
  • Ensuring all necessary Project resources are identified and that justification for such resources is clear, ensuring that limited resources are managed effectively and efficiently.
  • Ensuring that a comprehensive project budget is prepared reflecting the plan, resource needs.
  • Managing the integration of Project outputs into business-as-usual, addressing the readiness of users, compatibility of work systems and the realisation of benefits.
  • Recognising and promoting positive safety / security / sustainability behaviours and taking responsibility to ensure that any related actions are raised and followed through.
Experience Required
  • Experience (typically around 5+ years) of leading and delivering projects, in technical and regulated environments, and proven track record of managing and engaging effectively with internal and external stakeholders in such environments.
  • Experience of managing multi-disciplinary teams, including internal and external resources, to drive integration, teamwork and problem solving while holding people accountable for performance.
  • Demonstrable experience of successful delivery of projects to quality, time and budget.
  • Experience of managing positive relationships with the supply chain, including contract management.
  • Collaboration – able to build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, bringing people together to benefit the project.
  • Working with ambiguity – able to set direction in uncertain situations and apply knowledge and techniques to reduce ambiguity.
  • Conflict resolution – able to recognise, anticipate and effectively deal with existing or potential conflicts or disconnects at individual, team or strategic levels.
  • Communication – good oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, both internal and external to the organisation, and at all levels of seniority.
