Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a 18 month FTC for a Interim Senior Waste Specialist to join its busy team, flexible working across the NWS estate.

The IWM Delivery Team plays an integral role in helping to lead and drive change in the management of radioactive waste across the UK through the work that it delivers in support of opportunities identified within the IWM Programme and NDA Strategy commitments. The Senior Waste Specialist works as a key member of the IWM team and is responsible for the management and co-ordination of a program of work to deliver the IWM Programme.

As part of this role, you will identify, scope and deliver work to lead change in radioactive waste management practices across the UK nuclear industry, working collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders to enable benefits to be realised in support of the NDA mission.

This is a high profile and externally facing role which is critical to the success of the IWMP & Strategy business group within NWS with external stakeholders.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders to identify and progress implementation of opportunities to improve radioactive waste management practice across the industry (including problem statement development, workshop planning, facilitation and write-up, technical analysis, production of tools / resources / guidance documents and participation in external facing waste management services such as Peer Reviews / Peer Assists / Peer Learning);
  • Provide strategic support to other NWS business groups as and when appropriate;
  • Provide high quality strategic analysis of key data, such as national inventory and industry-wide cost data;
  • Provide high-quality written reports and papers on a broad range of waste management and policy issues;
  • Representation of the IWM Programme at internal and external stakeholder events and meetings, Including but not limited to:
  • IWM Programme and Steering Groups (IWMPG & IWMSG),
  • Senior Governance Committee (SGC) and Senior Strategy Committees (SCC’s),
  • governance meetings, project meetings, workshops and where appropriate participation in,
  • Participation in and, where required, presenting to industry groups such as the IWM Industry Forum;
  • Participation in and, where required, presenting to NDA IWMP groups;
  • Participating in cross-industry forums as required (such as Nuclear Waste & Decommissioning Research Forum sub-groups);
  • Attending stakeholder meetings / conferences / exhibitions as required;
  • Be aware of, work to and promote the application of NWS’s Standards and Expectations, including the company’s commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity
  • Represent the Principal Waste Specialist and on occasion the Head of IWM as required;
  • To be aware of and abide by the company’s Standards and Expectations;

  • In addition, the post-holder will undertake other activities commensurate with their skills and experience as and when require.
Experience Required
  • Good first degree in science or engineering subject.
  • Chartered membership status (or working towards) in relevant professional institute.
  • Programme/Project management experience.
  • Extensive working experience in the field of radioactive waste management.
  • Proven track record of working with stakeholders, chairing and facilitating meetings.
  • Knowledge of the inventory of radioactive wastes, including knowledge of the form, characteristics and hazards of the wastes.
  • Strategic understanding of radioactive waste management and the NDA’s role, including understanding of the emerging NDA topic strategies and programmes.
  • Thorough understanding of the requirements for disposal to existing and future facilities.
  • Working knowledge and delivery of NDA’s Strategy Management System process.
  • Demonstrably good oral and written communication skills.
  • Leadership and influencing skills required, together with the ability to communicate at all levels.
