Job Description

Nuclear Waste Services is looking for a Sustainability Lead to join its busy team remote working, with occasional travel to Cumbria, Warrington and Oxfordshire.

Roles and Responsibilities

We are seeking high calibre expertise in the field of sustainability to represent us externally and develop our own capability and champion sustainability in waste management. You will develop, define and implement the future Sustainability Strategy that connects and embeds across all the departments in NWS.

As part of this role, you will have oversight of the sustainability commitments and goals set by the board for Nuclear Waste Services and will report quarterly to the board on progress.

You will be expected to role model and build a culture where our organisation is empowered to improve their sustainability leadership at the personal and collective team, corporate and NDA group level. 

You will also lead the long-term strategic level sustainability planning and implementation of a range of programmes / projects / policies and initiatives to support the delivery of our commitments.

  • Accountable for the NWS sustainability strategy and associated implementation plans
  • Be a strategic leader and bring experience of leading and advising on sustainability, ideally with knowledge of the nuclear waste lifecycle
  • Be the NWS subject matter expert on Sustainability, and act as a trusted advisor to the executive & senior management and build capability and expertise across the organisation. 
  • Ensure that sustainability is embedded into all the business driving strategies
  • Act as a key interface across the group on related policy and strategy matters
  • Create and enact a sustainability communications strategy
  • Deputise for the Head of Strategy when required
  • Be forward thinking and horizon scan for industry sustainability best practise and monitor local, UK, & global trends, and then be able to act and adjust the sustainability strategy to manage impacts.
  • Develop, Monitor and report on sustainability performance targets (KPIs) – own the sustainability performance dashboard
  • Develop the learning and training plan to increase sustainability capability and leadership across NWS
  • Promote the integration of sustainable practises through all parts of our management system processes and policies, and function as process owner where appropriate.
  • Direct report to the Head of Strategy, and line manager to a small team (2-3 specialists), in addition to managing and developing graduates and apprentices.
Experience Required

Essential

  • Degree in scientific/engineering or relevant discipline or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of being a strong problem solver that can lead and collaborate across diverse workfaces and with multiple stakeholders to move barriers and find solutions to complex issues
  • Ability to influence at all levels of the organisation including the executive, board and NDA level
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in a range of nuclear waste technical area
  • Knowledge of sustainability issues including practices, policies, legislation and stakeholders relating to radioactive & non-radioactive waste management
  • Knowledge and experience of sustainability assessment tools and methods
  • Experience of leading geographically dispersed teams and matrix management
  • Evidence of applying knowledge to build credibility with stakeholders
  • Ability to problem solve, engage and secure commitment at all levels of the organisation and bring about change to meet the company sustainability goals. Effect changes in a matrix organisation context, building consensus through co-creation and influence to bring about true collaboration.
  • MSc/PhD in Sustainability or relevant discipline
  • Chartership (IEMA or related discipline) or professional qualification in Sustainability
